- The part of us that acts as a compass, offering guidance when life gets extra crazy
- A quiet place inside of us where we can go to make everything calm and alright
- A certain something that when nourished virtually rids the world of assholes
The above are my definitions. In perfect honesty, it’s a hard thing to pin down the spirit. Even the name is elusive. Soul, universal consciousness, breath of life, the divine, the godself, the recesses of the heart, and way more I can’t think of right now.
Then we have science and its ongoing goal of demoting the spirit to a random side effect of consciousness. Neat goal but it’s never going to happen.
While defining or even locating the spirit is a tricky, personal business, most everyone understands flow.
Flow: In positive psychology, flow, also known as the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus…and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does
I hope everyone on earth has experienced this state because it is wonderful. Time flies as you do your best work, fully alive and with a smile on your face, convinced that you are truly in the right place doing the right thing and most importantly, it matters. This seems to go beyond positive thinking, or feeling alert and driven after a decent sized line of coke. No, it’s something deeper. Something transcendental.
I believe flow is letting your spirit dance in the rain.
Exercise is an easy way to enter the flow state. Ask any yogi, dancer, fighter, or crossfitter, there is something spiritual about sweating, about feeing alive and at home in your body. Especially that part of the body we can’t find in an anatomical textbook. You guessed it, the spirit!
And the beauty is that exercise comes in many forms, it doesn’t have to be hard or cost a bunch of cash to get started with. It’s about movement. Stretch, bend, flex, jump, squat, play Dance Dance Revolution, have lots of intense sex, clean the apartment, search Craigslist for a used pogo stick and learn to do rad backflips (which’ll lead to mucho intense sex).
Point is, the name and type of activity doesn’t matter as long as you like it, or stick with it long enough to learn to love it. That’s when the magic happens.
